There are certain requirements that F-1 and J-1 Students must follow:
- Passport must be valid at all times
- Maintain full-time enrollment (12 units per quarter) and normal progress toward your degree objective as stated on your current I-20/DS-2019
- Do not accept employment off-campus without permission from the UCI International Center or USCIS
- File an application with the International Center to extend your permission to stay in the U.S. as needed, and prior to the expiration date on your I-20/DS-2019 (you can request an extension 90 prior to the end of your program date.
- Notify the UCI International Center if you plan to transfer to another school

Students who are F-1 or J-1 are eligible for certain types of employment. F-1 or J-1 students are allowed to work on-campus for 20 hours a week during the academic year, and full-time during vacation/break periods.

If you are an F-1/J-1 student, there are few steps you must take in order to travel overseas.
Before you leave:
- Have your I-20/DS-2019 signed by a Designated School Official (DSO). The signature you receive is valid for 6 months from the date signed.
- Valid visa stamp in passport. If your visa is expired, you will have to renew it at a U.S. Consulate or Embassy. You may be asked to sign a Risk of Travel form by the International Center.
- If your are on OPT while you are traveling, please review the Traveling while on OPT Information sheet.
