EMPLOYMENT
J-1 Exchange Visitors
You may engage in the employment as stated on your Form DS-2019.
Additional employment may be authorized by the program sponsor
provided that:
- It is consistent with the purpose for which you entered the
U.S.
- It falls within the sponsor's description.
- It is an essential part of your program.
*This additional employment must be in writing, either on the
Form DS-2019 or in a letter.
How to Obtain a Social
Security Number
The Social Security Administration has changed the process for
applying for social security number for international students.
F-1 students must have a job offer, and proof of it, in order
to apply for a Social Security card and number.
FACULTY, RESEARCHERS, & SCHOLARS IN J-1, H-1B,
TN, O-1
- Passport *
- I-94 card
- Visa Document (J-1's need Form DS-2019; all other visa
holders need either their Form I-94 and/or Approval Notice
of your status.)
J-2 Visa Holders
- Passport*
- I-94 card
- Employment Authorization
- Visa Document (J's need Form DS-2019; all other visa holders
need either their Form I-94 and/or Approval Notice of your
status).
Please note: If your passport is less than a
year old, you will need to provide an additional document verifying
your birth date (i.e. birth certificate).
*Be sure to ask for a receipt of your application. You
will receive your Social Security Card in the mail. The process
will take a minimum of 4 weeks, but may take longer. You must
provide a copy of your card to your hiring departments and the
International Center when you receive it. |
